Making TIE Avenger from a FAX

Just imagine the most deadly fighter, and many would try to envision the TIE Advanced. That is exactly what our artist Rob Burns did. The TIE Advanced is based on a design from Lord Vader and is the first TIE Fighter to have a hyperdrive motivator unit capability. Many written descriptions surround this superior "TIE Avenger" yet there are very few accurate visual references

So, with written descriptions, a poor quality fax (shown at right), and a taste for challenge, Rob had to examine every aspect of the ship and construct each detail without any real visual reference. How exactly did he do that?

In an interview, we asked Rob about the processes that evolve around re-creating a ship...

"There are nine, sometimes more processes. Here are the basics:

  1. model concept
  2. research of concept
  3. planning model's construction, R&D of new techniques
  4. building & mapping the model's parts, sorting out problems
  5. test images of development
  6. final detailing and adjusting, approval
  7. final lighting and hi-res raytrace
  8. Photoshop editing of image and compositing in background
  9. place image into card frame..."
