Star Trek CCG Tenth Anniversary Contest #1:
The First Contest
April 7, 2004 RESULTS
We promised you contests, with a chance to win Tenth Anniversary foils,
Necessary Evil foils, Tenth Anniversary commemorative posters, and more.
And here's the first of ten, count'em, ten Tenth Anniversary contests, each
of which will have ten winners. It's... (drum roll) ... The First Contest!
I can hear what you're thinking now: "Well, isn't that an imaginative
title for the first contest!" Ah, but this isn't just the first contest
it's the "First" contest: all about various "firsts"
in Star Trek CCG over the years. If you know enough about the "firsts,"
you could win! And even if you don't, you still have a chance for a consolation
prize. Just select an answer for each of the questions below, fill in your
contact information, and send your entry.

Which was the first card to be revealed online for the Voyager expansion?
|
|
|
B.
|
Seven of Nine (R)
Unlike many sets where we revealed the UR first, for Voyager we gave you
the card we knew everyone wanted to see the de-Borged Seven of Nine.

Which expansion included a card named First?

The original First Edition booster pack size was 15 cards (1 R, 3 U,
11 C). Later the pack size was dropped to 9, and the last few expansions
had 11-card packs, as does Second Edition. Which expansion was the first
to have 9-card booster packs?
|
|
|
C.
|
First Contact
AU and QC both still had 15-card packs like Premiere.

Which was the first expansion to have 30-card booster display boxes?

First Contact

Which was the first product to be released that included "expansion
icons" on the cards?
|
|
|
D.
|
First Contact
There was some uncertainty over the timing of First Contact and The Fajo
Collection, both of which had expansion icons. While Fajo was originally
scheduled to ship before First Contact, the final release dates were December
17, 1997 for First Contact, and December 31, 1997 for The Fajo Collection.
(My original posted answer, First Anthology, was incorrect. I was so sure
of the answer I didn't actually look at the cards. Live and learn...)

the Voyager property logo Dr. Telek R'Mor, Thomas Paris, and Ensign
Tuvok.

Each of the 121 cards of each rarity level in First Edition Premiere
(C, U, and R) had exactly the same rarity, because there were 121 cards
on each press sheet. Which was the first set to have "split rarity"
where some cards of a given rarity level were more or less rare than
others?
|
|
|
|
Either Alternate Universe OR Q-Continuum
The answer I was actually looking for was Alternate Universe, which
AFAIK had a split rarity in the commons, with 39 C3's and
one C4, the Alternate Universe Door. (Note that neither the R or U cards
had split rarity; there were 40 R3's on the rare sheet, plus one UR; and
40 U3's on the uncommon sheet plus one rare card, which has exactly the
same frequency as the 40 other R's.)
However, it has been brought to my attention that a document of "set
statistics" available on decipher.com in 1996 (and still extant in
various archives) states flatly that the common sheet had only 120 slots.
While everyone I have spoken to here at Decipher considers that wildly improbable
(and I am hunting for a press sheet to confirm it), many people used this
information to answer the question, and thus picked Q-Continuum, which had
an R4 and a C4, which were marked on the collector's card list as being
4/3 more common than the other R's and C's. So I accepted either answer.
(Incidentally, many of you apparently thought of split rarity only in connection
with R cards. The question, however, clearly indicated that it was about
all rarity levels.)

In which Second Edition set did the first Pah-wraith card(s) appear?
|
|
|
B.
|
Energize
This was one of three new keywords in the set. The others were Prophet
and Dabo Girl.

The Winners
Of the 574 valid entries received, 43 got all ten questions
correct. (For #9, 16 answered A and 27 answered B.) Our first three places
were randomly selected from those 43; the other seven were randomly selected
from all valid entries. Congratulations to:

In addition to the above-listed winners, a duplicate set of
1st-3rd prizes will be sent to the three winners originally posted (selected
according to my mistaken answer to question 6), who are listed below; I
don't want to disappoint announced winners as a result of my mistake. Previously
announced 4th-10th place winners remain, though a new 10th place has been
added (former 5th place Josh Carey was randomly selected for the new 2nd
place). My apologies for the mix-up!
