What's In a Name? WARS: The Mumon Rift
Last Friday, Decipher announced the return of the original Star Wars CCG
mechanic in a new TCG to be based on an all-new proprietary science fiction
property, WARS: The Mumon Rip . But anyone re-reading the press
release today will find a small but significant change: the property
has been renamed WARS: The Mumon Rift .
Why? Consider it a first-hand demonstration of a statement contained in
the announcement: "Prospective players will be able to follow the game's
development, participate in active community boards, [and] offer feedback
to the designers..." No sooner had the announcement been made than
players began offering their comments and suggestions on the special event
message board, and that feedback is being closely monitored not only by
the design team, but also by Decipher CEO Warren Holland.
One suggestion that Warren particularly took to heart involved the name
of the property. In a message about The Gateless Gate that referred to "The
Mumon Rift" rather than "The Mumon Rip," Warren saw the possibility
of a better title.
"I love the double meaning of 'Rift.' " he replied, quoting those
meanings:
rift: (1) A gap or break in something where it has split apart (2) a
serious disagreement that disrupts good relations.
"Maybe we should call it that?" It wasn't long before an informal
poll began on the message board, with most responses favoring "Rift."
And after discussion with the design team, the decision was made: WARS:
The Mumon Rift it would be.
A small thing? Maybe. But it's also an indication of the value that Decipher
places on your feedback. Keep it coming, and be assured that we're paying
attention.
