One For the Record Books: Day Three Wrapup
Yesterday's rain was but a memory this morning, with the biggest day of
Gen Con greeted with blue skies and perfect temperatures. The convention
center was mobbed, and I found myself caught in a sea of people on my way
to the exhibit hall just at opening time.
The big event of the day was THE big event of DecipherCon 2004 the
WARS TCG sneak preview presentation. Full details of the event can be seen
here; for
this wrapup, sufficient to say that it was received with enthusiasm and
excitement all around. Following up the presentation, designer Tom Lischke
and illustrator Kieran Yanner conducted a "Design-a-Card" seminar
at the Decipher booth. Tom led the audience through the process of creating
the game text of the card, while Kieran photographed a randomly-selected
participant, John Timothy, and proceeded to create an illustration from
the photo on the spot, which will grace the card when it is incorporated
into a future set. Meanwhile, special guests John Howe and Michael Stackpole
signed their autographs to demo cards, copies of the WARS story, and other
items.

On the tournament front, Lord of the Rings TCG, Star Trek CCG, and .hack//ENEMY
TCG conducted single-elimination tournaments to pare down their finalists
to a final pair each. Final confrontations will be held on Sunday. A variety
of other tournaments were held throughout the day as well, including MegaMan
TCG sealed deck, LOTR TCG Arwen and Junior Championships, and a Star Trek
CCG team tournament.

Amidst the World Championship action, WARS TCG made Decipher tournament
history, setting a record for the largest Decipher tournament ever at 202
participants and this for a game that hasn't even released yet! Lots
of players have their eye on that $1000 cash prize. By 10 PM, there were
still two of the seven rounds to go; results will appear on Sunday.
