Richard "Dr. Evil" Pieper Successfully Defends Austin Powers
Title!
The 2004 Austin Powers World Championship – "The Irritating Interrogation"
drew 26 players who were there to prove that they had the most mojo. Amongst
the many shagadelic players were Austin Powers CCG notables including: Richard
"Dr. Evil" Pieper, 2003 World Champion; Abe "The Sausage King of Chicago"
Frohman; Heather "Hasn't had the pleasure" Davies; Deana "Felicity" Belt;
David "Tyger" Belt; Greg "With a (you know what goes here) Laser" Austin
and James and William Hoskin, from "London" England.
Prizes for the championship included: Felicity Shagwell's Corvette, Austin
Powers' Shaguar, and Nigel Powers' Mini Cooper – all in 1:18 scale,
of course. As an additional bonus, Kevin Reitzel, Decipher Convention Coordinator
and Austin Powers aficionado, donated a compete set of Austin Powers CCG
to give to one lucky player.
The event began with an intense training session and deck building seminar
run by Chris "Mustafa" Hines and current world champion Richard "Dr. Evil"
Pieper. After being trained, Patrick "I'm trading my robe for a better outfit
next year" Hines laid out the ground and got the event under way. The players
would start at four tables to determine who would wear the "Daddy Pants."
The event was scheduled for two rounds. At the end of the first round, the
top player from each table and two lucky wildcard entries would move to
the championship round.
At the conclusion of the first round, the top four players were; David
"Tyger" Belt, Sean "Always after Me Lucky Charms" O'Reilly, Richard "Dr.
Evil" Pieper and Matt "Version 1" Good. They moved to the top table along
with wildcard players John "Scrub #7" Powell and Geoff "Chardonnay" Gallo.
In the final round, the action at the top table was intense with many
shagadelic card plays by all. In the first half of the round, Richard was
able to begin a slugfest and get everyone to throw in. This brilliant tactic
gave him the "Daddy Pants" for the second half of the round. This advantage
proved to be the edge he needed to become the 2004 Austin Powers World Champion.
This makes Richard "Dr. Evil" Pieper the first and only player to win two
back-to-back championships. Richard has proven that he truly is the "Daddy
Pants."
