Some Shadowy Set Statistics

by Kathy McCracken

One thing everyone always wants to know about a new expansion is the numbers: how many cards of this culture or that card type, how many minions or companions, what's the highest strength Orc... and lots more. The speculative list-makers jump on each clue, like the collector's number of a revealed card relative to its place in the alphabet, and tweak their lists accordingly. So, I thought I'd toss out a few numbers for you to chew on.

First thing you'll want to know, I suppose, would be the card breakdown by cultures. What do you say I give you the Free Peoples numbers now, and the Shadow next week?

  • Dwarven: 12
  • Elven: 13
  • Gandalf: 13
  • Gollum: 4 (Note: that's just the Free Peoples part of the culture; there are Shadow cards as well)
  • Gondor: 14
  • Rohan: 17
  • Shire: 16

Also, there are two The One Rings (now doesn't that sound odd?), and 40 sites. I haven't done a full breakdown by card type yet, but I can tell you there are 25 possessions and one artifact. Each of the nine original companions have at least one incarnation in Shadows, and some have two. There are more minions than you can shake a stick at (not that that would be a particularly safe thing to do), including Barbarous, Frenzied, and Watchful Orcs and Bloodthirsty, Furious, and Ruthless Uruks – not to mention a Ferocious Haradrim, a Rampaging Easterling, and Strange-looking Men.

Shadows From 1 to 10

Or more accurately, from 10 to 1. Here's a countdown of things that there are 10 of, 9 of, and so on, in Shadows.

10 Lurkers lurking (see Úlairë Nertëa, one of the 8 creepy Nazgûl, below)
9 cards with Muster (Théoden, King of the Eorlingas)
8 creepy Nazgûl (Úlairë Nertëa, Ninth of the Nine Riders)
7 Rohan companions (see Théoden, one of the 9 cards with Muster, above)
6 sites "down under" (Underground) (Chamber of Mazarbul)
5 little Hobbits (Farmer Maggot, Hobbit of the Marish)
4 squishy marshes (Dammed Gate-stream)
3 orkish Denizens (Denizen of Khazad-Dûm)
2 ugly Trolls (Porter Troll)
and 1... Box? (yep, it's a Possession – Salt from the Shire, seen at right)

Well, there you are. It's not everything – where's the fun in that? – but enough, I hope, to whet your appetite for the cards you'll start seeing... tomorrow. In fact, tomorrow I'll add links to the 10 to 1 list showing you an example of each one.

List-makers, have at it!
