Of Reprints and Revisions

If you had to pick only 60 of the roughly 300 rare cards from Second Edition through Necessary Evil to reprint in foil versions, which would you choose? Tough call, wouldn't it be? But that's exactly what Star Trek CCG designers Brad DeFruiter and Evan Lorentz had to do for Reflections 2.0. Of course, as always, we're not going to let you in the whole list up front, but I can give you a few hints and a couple of spoilers today.

First, here's a breadown by sets:

  • Second Edition (base set): 9
  • Energize: 8
  • Call to Arms: 13
  • Necessary Evil: 30

No real surprises here. Considering the scarcity of the sold-out Necessary Evil, the decision to allot 30 of the slots to that set was pretty easy to make – it would get fully half of the Necessary Evil rares into players' hands. Second Edition was a huge set, but reasily available, and nine of the best cards already got foils, so it gets about the same coverage as the much smaller Energize. And Call to Arms introduced two new affiliations, reflected in the larger number of personnel card reprints.

How about card types? From all four sets, we have:

  • 15 Dilemmas
  • 1 Equipment
  • 12 Events
  • 6 Interrupts
  • 26 Personnel (8 affiliations plus Non-aligned)

Two of the personnel cards to be reprinted were a "given" right from the start. Why? Because each had significant errata, and any time an errata-ed card – especially a rare card – can be reprinted with the correction, that's A Good Thing.

The first of those cards is slightly unusual for errata – its game text didn't change. The errant feature of the original card was a red "Alternate Universe" icon, assigned to a number of cards before the decision was made to split "AU" into past, future, and "alternate universe/timeline" in Fractured Time. As luck would have it, the red icon (now the "Past" icon) turned out to be correct for all but one of the already-produced "AU" cards. That one was Jake Sisko, Temporal Anchor, who should have had a blue "Future" icon instead. Well, the designers weren't crazy about errata, but they didn't want to scrap their plan to accommodate a single card, so Jake's icon was errata-ed: what appears to be red is really blue. And now, you'll be able to get a copy where it really is blue.

The errata was more conventional on the other card. Locutus, Voice of the Borg, had an ability that let him score points if he used any of his skills "while facing a dilemma." The errata clarified that; he has to use the skill to meet one of the dilemma's requirements, not for some other purpose.(e.g., to allow the play of an interrupt).

Look for another "reprint" card each day (including weekends) in addition to the new foils on weekdays. Reprints will be on the separate list linked below. (Note with the exception of today's two cards, the images linked to the card list will be the original non-foil card images. The foils differ only in the copyright line – the copyright year is updated, and the "1" signifying the first printing is removed.)
