Reflections Contest #1:
Curses! Foiled Again!

November 17, 2004 – RESULTS

One unique aspect of foil cards is that a separate mask must be made for the foiling process. The black portions of the mask are not foiled, while the white portions (usually light sources and highlights) receive the foil treatment. Sometimes the mask looks very much like the finished card image, but other times it's a bit more obscure. In this contest, you get to see what the foil masks for some of the Reflections cards look like – and if you can figure out the species of the person(s) shown, you could win!

Below you'll find portions of the foil masks for ten of the new Reflections foils (not reprints). Some are personnel cards, others are "verbs" (dilemmas, events, or interrupts). What you see is most of the actual image area on the card, cropped enough to remove borders and icons (because they might help to identify the species). For each one, choose what you think is the species of the person or persons in the image. (If there is more than one person in the image, they are all the same species.) If you believe the person shown is of mixed species, select that option. For example, if the character was recognizable as Mr. Spock, you would select "Mixed Species", not Vulcan or Human.

The Prizes

  • First place: one display box of Reflections packs
  • Runners-up: 12 Reflections packs each

The Answers

1.

Mixed species. Nearly everyone got this wrong. Alexander Rozhenko, K'mtar is 3/4 Klingon and 1/4 human.

2.

Romulan, from Star Trek Nemesis.

3.

Even though you couldn't see that there were actually two people in this one, it doesn't matter because both are Bajoran.

4.

Vorta. (Click the image to see a full-sized view.)

5.

Human.

6.

No tricks here. These guys are all Klingon.

7.

He may have gotten Curzon's memories, but not the physical Dax symbiont. "Curzon" Odo's still a Changeling. (Click the image to see a full-sized view.)

8.

Borg.

9.

The Romulan trappings are pretty easily recognized, but then, so is this familiar image of Deanna Troi as Major Rakal, who is of course mixed species, Betazoid/human. (Click the image to see a full-sized view.)

10.

The single earring is the giveaway here; Yarka is Bajoran.

The Winners

This turned out to be more difficult than we had anticipated, largely due to K'mtar. The vast majority of the entries had him tagged as Klingon. Only two entries out of around 350 got everything right, so they're sharing first place and will each receive a display box of Reflections. On the other hand, K'mtar wasn't the only sticking point, because only 30 entries got 9 correct answers. Our two runners-up were randomly selected from those 30.

First place (tie)

Brent Knab
Kettering, Ohio

Matt Zinno
Sharon, Massachusetts

Runners-up

Caitlin Shindler
Annapolis, Maryland

Philippe Charette
Gatineau, Quebec

Congratulations! Your prizes will be shipped approximately 8-10 weeks after the release of Reflections. If you have any questions, please direct them to webmaster@decipher.com and specify by title exactly which contest you are enquiring about.
