Star Trek CCG Tenth Anniversary Contest #7:
Transformations

December 3, 2004 – CONTEST IS CLOSED

Welcome back to our Tenth Anniversary contests, after a much longer hiatus than I had anticipated. Now that the Reflections 2.0 contests are over, I'm going to try to squeeze in the four remaining contests I promised you for Tenth Anniversary. This one is called Transformations.

No, it doesn't have anything to do with John Doe. It's the kind of word "transformations" where you try to turn one word into another in the fewest steps, changing only one letter each step. The "words" that I've chosen for this contest are 5-letter names of STCCG characters, of which there are a plethora. Here's a simple example (only three of the five letters change), in which I will transform a Klingon scientist into a Kazon one in three easy steps:

DAVAL
DAVAR
DANAR
TANAR

Easy, no? Well, some of them will be a little more difficult than that. There are three transformations to make: one similar to the example, one where you have to deduce the starting and ending names, and one where you have to find the minimum-step solution.

Here's the rules for eligible names:

  • You can use 5-letter given names, surnames, or single names of characters who appear as a personnel card in either First Edition or Second Edition CCG.
  • The name must appear in the card title (not the subtitle).
  • Ignore ranks and titles such as Admiral or Vedek.
  • Ignore punctuation.

For example, you could use RAKAL (Major Rakal), NERYS (Kira Nerys), AHKEL (Ah-Kel and Ro-Kel), WODIN (Wo'Din), TELEK (Dr. Telek R'Mor), and even SEVEN (Seven of Nine). However, you cannot use MAJOR because it is a rank, not a name.

As before, we will first select a winner and two runners-up from those entries with all correct solutions. First place will go to whoever has the shortest correct solution to #3 in addition to having #1 and #2 correct. (In the event of a tie, the three places will be selected randomly from the tied entries.) The first three places will receive the following prizes:

1st place: A complete 18-card Necessary Evil foil subset.
2nd place: A complete 9-card Second Edition Premiere foil set.
3rd place: A Second Edition Premiere foil Martok, signed by actor J.G. Hertzler, plus a First Edition card autographed by an actor portrayed on the card (exact card TBA – I know I have several available, but I don't know which off the top of my head)

Fourth through tenth places will be randomly selected from ALL complete (you must answer all three questions) and valid entries received, regardless of the correctness of the answers, to receive the following prizes:

4th-10th place: One Second Edition Premiere foil (random selection).

In addition, each of the ten winners will receive a First Edition tournament foil. This set of former tournament prizes included foil versions of cards like Amanda Rogers, Chula: The Dice, Patrol Neutral Zone, and others. (Sorry, no choice available – we will select a random foil from our available stock.)

You have until Friday, December 3rd at 5pm Eastern Time to submit your winning entry. Good luck!

1. First, type in the five-letter names for each step of each transformation. You may change only one letter in each step. Please type in UPPERCASE (capital letters) for clarity and leave out all punctuation.

1.

Transform a genetic superman into an Alpha-Hirogen in four steps.

0.   SAROD
1.
2.
3.
4.   KARON

2.

This one's trickier because you need to figure out the start and end of the transformation from the clues provided. Make the transformation in seven steps.

0.  A Second Edition follower of The One.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.  A First Edition Vulcan who tried to bond with a Human/Klingon during Pon farr.

3.

Finally, I'll supply the starting and ending names for this one, but I'm not going to tell you how many steps it will take (hint: it's less than ten). There is more than one way to make this transformation, so I'll be looking for the one with the smallest number of steps. You're going to transform a Klingonoperative who spied on Romulan delegates aboard Deep Space 9, BO'RAK, into KULAN, a member of the Bajoran militia. Type one step into each space, without skipping any, then enter the number of the last step you used (the field containing KULAN) here:
Number of last step:

0.   BORAK
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
