Star Trek CCG Tenth Anniversary Contest #7:
Transformations
December 8, 2004 RESULTS
Welcome back to our Tenth Anniversary contests, after a much longer hiatus
than I had anticipated. Now that the Reflections 2.0 contests are over,
I'm going to try to squeeze in the four remaining contests I promised you
for Tenth Anniversary. This one is called Transformations.
No, it doesn't have anything to do with John Doe. It's the kind of word
"transformations" where you try to turn one word into another
in the fewest steps, changing only one letter each step. The "words"
that I've chosen for this contest are 5-letter names of STCCG characters,
of which there are a plethora. Here's the rules for eligible names:
- You can use 5-letter given names, surnames, or single names of characters
who appear as a personnel card in either First Edition or Second Edition
CCG.
- The name must appear in the card title (not the subtitle).
- Ignore ranks and titles such as Admiral or Vedek.
- Ignore punctuation.
The Prizes
1st place: A complete 18-card Necessary Evil foil subset.
2nd place: A complete 9-card Second Edition Premiere foil set.
3rd place: A Second Edition Premiere foil Martok, signed by actor
J.G. Hertzler, plus a First Edition Dr. Telek R'Mor card autographed by
actor Vaughn Armstrong.
4th-10th place: One Second Edition Premiere foil (random selection).
In addition, each of the ten winners will receive a First Edition tournament
foil.
The Answers
Turned out there was more than one way to effect each of these three
transformations.
| 1. |
Transform a genetic superman into an Alpha-Hirogen in four steps.
0. SAROD
1. JAROD
2. JAROK
3. JARON
4. KARON
|
The solution at left was the one I had in mind... completely overlooking
the fact that step 2 was superfluous:
0. SAROD
1. JAROD
2. JARON
3. KARON
Either answer was accepted, as was SAROD-JAROD-HARON-KARON.
|
| 2. |
This one's trickier because you need to figure out the start and end of
the transformation from the clues provided. Make the transformation in seven
steps.
0. GOVAL - A Second Edition follower of The One.
1. KOVAL
2. KORAL
3. TORAL
4. TORAK
5. MORAK
6. MORIK
7. VORIK - A First Edition Vulcan who tried to bond with a Human/Klingon
during Pon farr.
|
Several entries had fewer steps, but used "names" that have not,
as best I can determine, been used on personnel cards.
On the other hand, there is an extremely short ONE step solution
(if you know your Star Trek) that I had overlooked. The clue to Goval was
a direct reference to his subtitle, "Follower of The One." However,
I neglected to check out what character was named Morik... he's another
one of Lore's rogue Borg, so even though his card doesn't say so, he is
a "follower of The One." And MORIK --> VORIK works pretty nicely.
Unfortunately for the couple of entries that found this solution, they
contained errors in other answers.

| 3. |
You're going to transform a Klingon operative who spied on Romulan delegates
aboard Deep Space 9, BO'RAK, into KULAN, a member of the Bajoran militia.
|
0. BORAK
1. BORAD
2. SORAD
3. SORAN
4. SURAN
5. SULAN
6. KULAN
|
0. BORAK
1. TORAK
2. TORAN
3. SORAN
4. SURAN
5. SULAN
6. KULAN
|
|
There are two routes from Borak to Kulan, of equal lengths: six steps.
A handful of entries proposed 4- or 5-step solutions which, as for question
2, utilized non-existent (in STCCG, at least) names.

The Winners
This contest drew only 52 entries, of which 36 were all correct.
Our first three places were randomly selected from those 36; the other seven
were randomly selected from all entries. Congratulations to:
