The Family That Plays Together
Goes To Semifinals Together
John Kaufeld
Thursday's Young Jedi World Championships event featured a lot of names familiar to the game's community. However, one name stood out because of exemplary playing style, as well as the sheer number of times the tournament director called it: Rouleau. During Friday's world Semi-Finals, that same name will stand out because, for the first time in Decipher World Championship history, four members of the same family compete together in the same event.
Daniel Rouleau (age 11), David Rouleau (age 8), and their mom Brenda Rouleau (moms are ageless, which is just the way they like it) all advanced to Friday's Semi-Finals, where they join Dad, Michael Rouleau, who had won the Yavin 4 Regional in Virginia.
The family's passion for gaming grew from their interest in Star Wars and Star Trek. "We loved the shows, and then we discovered the games," remembers Michael. "First I started playing, then Daniel joined me. Pretty soon David wanted to give it a try," he explained. Finally, "the guys" persuaded Brenda to jump in as well. "They talked me into it, and now I'm the universal playtest partner," she added with a smile.
Daniel and David feel ready for the competition of the semi-finals. Their goal is Rouleau domination in the top slots heading into the Finals. "Then we can all play in Day 3!" exclaimed an eager Daniel.
David, the youngest of the crew, summed up the family's whole World Championship experience very well: "It's just fun. I like it!"
