FreedomCon II to Hold Charity Events
Quick question:
What do October 4 6, 2002, non-stop gaming, and a life-threatening
disease have in common?
If you answered FreedomCon II, then you answered correctly!
FreedomCon II is a three-day gaming event held this year at NeoQuest Games
in Lansdale, PA. The purpose of this event? Well, there are a couple.
The first purpose of the event is fun fun fun! Non-stop gaming! Instant
tournaments! Huge prizes! Cash prizes! Top level competition! People from
all over the US are flying in to take part of this huge event. Big name
players. Casual players. Players looking to have a good time!
The second purpose of the event is to raise awareness. About what? Mitochondrial
disease. What is mitochondrial disease? Well, the best way to describe it
is like this:
Imagine a major city with half its power plants shut down. At best, such
conditions would produce a "brownout" with large sections of the city working
far below optimum efficiency. Now imagine your body with one half of its
energy-producing facilities shut down. The brain would be impaired, vision
would be dim, muscles would twitch spastically or would be too weak to allow
your body to walk or write, your heart would be weakened, and you would
not be able to eat and digest your food.
FreedomCon II will have representatives at the event all weekend, showing
videos, talking of their own experiences and answering every single question
you may have on this disease that is relatively unknown and yet affects
so many people.
To help enlighten people about the various forms that mitochondrial disease
can take, FreedomCon II is holding a contest. Decipher, Inc. at one point
in time has produced a card that is the name of a mitochondrial disease.
The first person to name that disease and card, and write up a short report
(one paragraph) on what the symptoms of the disease are will get his or
entry into one cash tournament of their choice free! Send all entries to
mbc9457@yahoo.com
The third purpose of this event is to raise money for the UMDF. UMDF offers
support to all sufferers of mitochondrial disorders regardless of diagnosis,
suspected or confirmed. Unfortunately, this support costs money. Being relatively
unknown in both the media and the medical community does not help the UMDF
in their efforts to raise money. So at FreedomCon II we are having a variety
of ways to help out the UMDF while doing things you the players
love best!
First, we have the chance to win a box of Premiere Fellowship Lord
of the Rings TCG Boosters! For a simple $1 donation to mbc9457@yahoo.com
through Paypal or by following the directions at this link
http://decktech.net/freedomcon/donate.php
you are entered into a drawing that can get you the box. Whether you are
coming to FreedomCon II or not, this is a great way to help out the UMDF.
This is not limited to those who can make the event. Even if you are not
at FreedomCon II, you can still win and the box will be shipped to you free
of charge.
Second, we have silent auctions. Tons of support from many businesses
and groups have garnered FreedomCon II quite the collection of collectibles.
Foil cards. Signed cards. Oversized cards. Full sets of cards. Posters.
Promos. Collectible items. All money raised from these silent auctions goes
straight to the UMDF. No middle man. No hidden fees. That day you pay for
your winnings it goes straight to the people at the UMDF.
Finally, we have charity tournaments! That's right! Sealed deck events
where you simply pay for the product! All product has been generously donated
and all money you pay in for your product goes straight to the UMDF! Again,
no middle man, no hidden fees.
If you want to find out more about the UMDF, check out www.umdf.org.
The page is full of information and how you can help out on a local basis
to help raise awareness of this relatively unknown disease.
