While
I've become known for my literary young-adult novels, like most writers, my interests
vary greatly-and in fact my career began by writing a syndicated humor column.
Writing games for Decipher has given me an opportunity to revisit that fun, quirky
side of myself, and has challenged me to think in very different ways, in order
to create these unique entertainment experiences.
For me the How To Host A Murder® games are a form of theater-creating characters
with many layers of unpredictable, and absurdly comical twists that unfold as
the evening goes on. Each time, the game plays a bit differently, and it's part
of my task to provide just enough structure and continuity to keep that theatrical
experience building toward the solution every time.
The How To Host A Teen Mystery® games are special because the response from
kids, parents and teachers have been incredibly positive. The games are great
fun to play, but beyond that, there is an educational value implicit in the very
nature of the game: Kids have to read, comprehend, and then make deductions based
on the clues they're given.
With the Armchair Detective puzzles, I found layering dozens of clues into
a single visual puzzle, and then writing a story around those clues, a fascinating
process. It's been thrilling to see the visuals Decipher's Creative Director,
Lucy Thacker, created for the puzzles-which have elevated the product to a new
level. These are not just puzzles, they are works of art, I'm proud to have been
involved with their creation.
