Star Trek CCG Contests

8-Card Pumped-Up Ship

There are lots of cards out there that will let you pump up your ship's stats to insane levels, but some are more worthwhile than others and some ships are easier to pump up than others. The goal in this contest is to select 8 cards (including a ship) that will give you the highest total attributes for a non-[Borg] ship (sorry, Borg fans).

The Answers

While there isn't a single "correct" set of 8 cards to win this contest, all the potential winners have several cards in common:

Card List

1. Fesarius (9-12-18)

2. Balok (OFFICER, matching commander for Fesarius)

3-5. Three personnel with the other six personnel types

6. Captain's Log (WEAPONS and SHIELDS +3 for total 9-15-21)

7. Data's Head (attributes all +2, for total 11-17-23)

8. Kurlan Naiskos (triples all three attribute totals, for total 33-51-69)

Ship Attribute Total (total RANGE + WEAPONS + SHIELDS) = 153

With its initial attribute total of 39, the Fesarius is 6 points ahead of any other existing ship (18 after tripling), and it turns out that there is no way to make up for that lead using different cards. Many people tried to load the ship with double ENGINEER or double SCIENCE personnel, with Nutational or Metaphasic Shields (usually in place of Data's Head) for a SHIELDS boost of +2 each. The catch is, you can't get more than three ENGINEER (or SCIENCE) and still have all the personnel types to make the Kurlan Naiskos work – and three ENGINEER will just make up for the loss of the boosts from Data's Head.

The three personnel other than Balok (who, as the only staffing requirement, is required by the contest rules to staff the ship for movement) can be selected from a wide range. A common choice was Lore (CIVILIAN-ENGINEER-SECURITY) plus a SCIENCE-MEDICAL (e.g., Vekor) and any non-Federation V.I.P. (don't forget that Lore won't work with Federation affiliation!), but there are also numerous combos of three personnel, each with two personnel types, that will fill the bill. Most of these tended to be Non-Aligned or Federation personnel, but there were also a few interesting Romulan, Dominion, and Ferengi combos.

Common mistakes included forgetting to include all 7 personnel types for the Kurlan Naiskos, and not using a Kurlan Naiskos. It's also worth noting that an outpost's SHIELDS extension is not an enhancement to the ship's SHIELDS and that Divert Power's enhancement is short-term (current turn) and doesn't qualify under the contest rules.

The Winner

238 complete entries were received, of which all but 39 either had totals lower than 153 or were disqualified for errors or failure to follow the contest instructions. From the surviving 39 entries, the randomly selected winner (who will receive five Star Trek CCG booster packs).was Bianca Groenendijk, of Dordrecht, The Netherlands, with the following card lineup:

Fesarius
Balok
Ambassador Krajensky
Fontaine
Dulmer
Captain's Log
Data's Head
Kurlan Naiskos
