Star Trek CCG Contests

Second to None

The impending 2nd Edition for Star Trek CCG brings on thoughts of twos – things that come second, new versions, pairs, duality... So how about some "2"-themed contests to pass the time? For the moment the prizes will be 1st Edition booster packs from recent expansions, but as the 2nd Edition gets closer we'll be offering some 2nd Edition prizes.

There always seems to be a lot of hoopla about "the first" of anything: the first baby of the year, the first person to hold a position, and so on. This contest, on the contrary, focuses on the second in various areas of Star Trek CCG. Answer the five questions below correctly and you may win 10 assorted booster packs of Star Trek CCG! Three winners will be selected at random from all the correct, valid entries received.

The Answers

These questions were apparently quite a bit more difficult than I had anticipated, so I'm going to go into detail on the answers. For reference, here's a list of release dates for the earlier sets (from the Star Trek CCG Product Timeline – a bit outdated, since it hasn't been updated since December 2000, but this contest didn't involve anything that late):

Premiere Edition (November 1994)
Alternate Universe (November 1995)
Q Continuum (October 1996)
First Anthology (June 1997)
First Contact (December 1997)
The Fajo Collection (December 1997)
Away Team Pack (May 1998)
OTSD (May 1998)
Deep Space Nine (July 1998)
Starter Deck II (December 1998)

1.

The Premiere set contained nine different card types, but soon others began to appear. What was the second card type to be added to the original nine?

The nine original card types were Artifact, Dilemma, Equipment, Event, Interrupt, Mission, Outpost, Personnel, and Ship. The Alternate Universe expansion added the first new card type, Doorway, and Q-Continuum had the second new card type: Station. Although stations became a subtype of the Facility card type in the Deep Space Nine rules, there was no Facility card type when Station cards appeared and they were listed as a new card type in the Rules Supplement. Q-icon cards were never considered a new card type; in fact, the Rules Supplement specifically stated that the cards were interrupts, events, and dilemmas. (Many people said Objectives; however, First Contact also introduced Time Locations, so neither could be considered to come before the other.)

2.

Name the second version of the Jean-Luc Picard persona to be published.

The first version of the Jean-Luc Picard persona was, of course, Jean-Luc Picard (Premiere), even though personas had not yet been defined as such. When they were defined – in Q-Continuum – that set included the second version: Galen. Although Lt. (j.g.) Picard appeared in Alternate Universe, he isn't (and wasn't) a version of "the Jean-Luc Picard persona." He's the only version of the Lt. (j.g.) Picard persona. Locutus of Borg, named by many entries, was in the Fajo Collection.

3.

Name the second dual-personnel card to appear.

The first was Sisters of Duras, in The Fajo Collection. The second didn't show up until Deep Space Nine – Jake and Nog. (Quite a few people confused dual-personnel with dual-affiliation, naming Stefan de Seve.)

4.

In which product did the second Ferengi-affiliation card appear?

The card itself was the answer to the previous question, Jake and Nog (they're Federation/Ferengi), so the product was Deep Space Nine. The first Ferengi-affiliation card was another dual-affiliation card, the preview Quark Son of Keldar in First Anthology. Ferengi Trading Post was in Starter Deck II.

5.

What was the second Star Trek CCG product to have one or more dual-affiliation cards?

Dual-affiliation cards made their debut in Alternate Universe, with two Romulan/Federation personnel, Major Rakal and Stefan DeSeve. The next product to have any was not, as many believed, The Fajo Collection or Deep Space Nine; there were in fact two dual-affiliation personnel in First Anthology, Quark Son of Keldar (Klg/Fer) and Garak (Car/NA).
