Thanks for letting us tell our stories. There's
a complete recap below of the Tall Tales or True daily entries, twelve in all.
Juz Pakes, Jedi Knight
DAY TWELVE: The Juggler, Francis K. Lalumiere
"I was still living in Montreal when the Hoth expansion set came out in November
of 1996. Jean-Luc Simard (Gold 27) organized a Hoth-only constructed deck tournament
in his home town of Sherbrooke. Sherbrooke had just been hit by a most generous
snowstorm, which made driving down there quite a challenge. Then we discovered
that the tournament was being held in a basement that was literally surrounded
by ice and snow - and the heating system was defective! The result was a Hoth-themed
tournament that went far beyond the cards in your decks. Players, seated on utterly
frozen chairs and stools, were playing with wool hats and gloves on. "
ANSWER: Anyone who knows Francis knows he comes from one of the colder regions
of North America, and indeed, his story is true. The ultimate Hoth theme tournament?
Decipher's 1996 World Championships in Vail, Colorado of course!
DAY ELEVEN: Road Warrior, Sean Smallman
"In a tournament game I was playing a bounty-hunting deck against Mind What You
Have Learned. I was trying to use Dark Deal, but was thwarted by my opponent's
Jedi testing. His Daughter Of Skywalker was trying to go all the way to Jedi Test
5, and I only had regular starships on the table with a permanent pilot aboard
and no extra capacity. I played "Come With Me" to remove the permanent pilot,
deployed Boba Fett in the open slot and gave him his blaster and a thermal detonator.
Landing the One Fett Wrecking Crew on Dagobah my opponent was quick to point out
that I couldn't initiate battle because of Yoda's game text. However during my
next control phase, I played sniper to trigger the detonator and drew a one, taking
out Boba, Daughter of Skywalker, Yoda, and Jedi Tests 1,2, and 3."
ANSWER: True. Apparently the Thermal Detonator and low destiny is the natural
enemy of Jedi Testing.
DAY TEN: Game Designer, Tom Lischke
"The Hidden Base enhancer, A New Secret Base was originally thought to be too
weak. That's why, in development, we doubled the number of Force drains that the
Light Side could cancel by controlling systems and said that they didn't have
to be battlegrounds."
ANSWER: FALSE. C'mon.... would we do that for Light Side?
DAY NINE:
Rules Guy, Juz
"At one stage in Jabba's Palace development, all the unique light side
aliens names started with Frank, and all the unique Dark Side aliens names started
with Ed. E.g. Ed The Jawa, Frank the Elom, Ed The Skrilling. etc. Indeed, Jabba's
lore said "Leader of the Eds."
ANSWER: Finally, Juz tells a truth! Jabba's Palace playtest was indeed full
of Eds and Franks. easier for the game designers at the start of design, somewhat
tricky for the playtesters.
DAY EIGHT: Game Designer Tom Lischke
Several Game designers were killed in order to get approval for the six line effect
template used on A New Secret Base. Well, almost killed. In fact, it is the first
time that a basic effect was placed on a six line template, only seen in the past
on sabacc cards. Sandy Wible had to work hard to create a six line effect template
from the ground up!
ANSWER: TRUE. A new Secret Base does one of those subtle things that we
have never done in an Effect before - 6 lines of game text. The bit about Sandy
working hard though may have been false.
DAY SEVEN: Road Warrior, Sean Smallman
For those who don't know, Decipher is in an area very popular with the Military.
Thus lots of jet airplane noise. At a friend's one day it seemed that every time
he moved the Death Star, it coincided with a plane passing overhead. The windows
would rattle and a rumbling sound would fill the house. I said to him how amazing
it was that his Death Star was so life-like and he replied instantly "That's because
this is a 'Special Edition' Death Star, with improved sound effects!"
Answer: Although the bit about Decipher being in a military area is true,
Sean's pulling your leg. FALSE.
DAY SIX: Game Designer, Tom Lischke
Prisoner 2187 was titled Prisoner 3451 at one point in development. It was a persona
of Chewie designed to replace Leia in Rescue The Princess.
Answer: Prisoner 3451? False. Come on.... that was stretch even
for us!
DAY FIVE: Marketing Manager, Kendrick Summers
Editor's Note: There's a thin link to Third Anthology in here somewhere...maybe...
:)
Tom and I were playing one of our weekly "who's the man!" games not long after
Hoth came out. In one single control phase Tom: o Snipers my Tantive (with Luke
and Wedge aboard) with his superlaser. o He then blows up the Hoth: Main Power
Generators making me lose 8 force. o And the coup de grace? He CPI's to blow away
Hoth altogether To make a long story short... on my next turn I have only Light
side Alderaan providing me any Force, and Tom sitting across from me, looking
like he just won the lottery. Tom was the man that week.
Answer: Let's face it, no one could make up a story like that! True, Tom
did blow away half of Kendrick's table in one foul Control Phase. And yes, Tom
did look like he had won the lottery.
DAY FOUR: Game Designer Tom Lischke
"Prisoner 2187 was originally designed as a two sided character, one side for
when she was a captive and one side for when she was freed."
Answer: The double sided Leia was true. A nice idea a t the time
that just couldn't be properly worked into the desired game play effect. But don't
worry, we aren't finished with double-sided card ideas yet....
DAY THREE: Bravo Leader, Kevin Reitzel
"A Jabba's Palace expansion Light Side character, called Sergeant Doallyn, was
originally nicknamed "The Masked Avenger". The original concept for this card
was a Dark Side character card with game text "power = X and ability = Y where
X + Y must equal 5. When deployed you must declare what his power and ability
will be for remainder of game."
Answer: The Masked Avenger was a true story! Many faces of the mysterious
Sergeant Doallyn were seen during Jabba's Palace playtest, but thankfully (for
me at least) the one with X and Y on it never saw the "Light Side" of day.
DAY TWO: Game Designer Tom Lischke
"There was originally an Effect scheduled for Third Anthology that was inserted
specifically as a "story-line reward" card. Basically it said that if the Light
Side had Chewie, Obi-Wan, Luke with Plastoid Armor deployed on him, Prisoner 2187
and TK-422 in play on the Death Star, Dark Side must lose half their life force
(rounded up)."
ANSWER: The fabled story-line Effect card? False. It may happen
one day, but it was never considered for Third Anthology. Tom was fibbing. Maybe
for Death Star II....?
DAY ONE: from Rules Guy Juz
"Artoo
In Red 5 (go ahead, check out the card) was originally slated to be another
starship - Han, Chewie, Luke, Leia, R2-D2 & C-3PO In Falcon. It was to be
the strongest ship in the galaxy by far, but with a cost that would make you think
twice before putting 4 copies in your deck. It never got through the first phase
of development though, due to not only the outrageously long card title, but also
the problem of fitting a forfeit value of 34 into that little forfeit box."
Tall tale, or true as can be? VOTE BELOW.
ANSWER: False. You guys don't believe my rulings, so why believe my stories!
We have yet to try a card with more than 3 unique personas in the one starship.
But we ain't finished yet!
