What's a Young Jedi deck?
07/99 - Justin Pakes (jediknight@decipher.com)

Take 60 cards you like the best, and put them to the strategic test!

What's a deck?
A deck is the collection of playing pieces you want to use in a game. Young Jedi decks are built according to 4 simple deckbuilding rules:

(1) Each Young Jedi tournament legal deck has exactly 60 cards.

(2) There are two kinds of Young Jedi decks. Light Side is a deck made of 60 cards all with the blue "Obi-Wan Kenobi" back. Dark Side is 60 cards all with the red "Darth Maul" back. In every game, one player puts his Dark Side deck against his opponent's Light Side deck. You only play one deck at a time, but almost everyone makes at least one deck of each type - this way you're ready for any opponent!

(3) Young Jedi decks are built on the "6 by 10" rule. Every tournament legal card in the Young Jedi game has a "deckbuilding dot" in the bottom right hand corner. You won't find the dot on the "Sample Only" cards of the special YJ deck given out at game demonstrations.

Deckbuilding dots come in 6 delicious colors:
Red, Green and Blue are for YJ characters only.
Yellow is for Battle Cards.
Orange is for Weapons.
Purple is for locations and starships.

Every 60-card deck has 30 characters (10 red, 10 blue and 10 green), 10 weapons (orange), 10 battle cards (yellow) and 10 purple dot cards (a mix of locations and maybe also starships).

(4) A Young Jedi deck must follow the "three-planet rule." Each full game can stretch across 3 planets - Tatooine, Naboo and Coruscant. To be legal, a deck has to have at least one Tatooine, one Naboo and one Coruscant location card. You can have more of each location if it's important to your deck strategy.

That's ALL you ever need to know about deckbuilding. Every other choice you make about what cards go into your deck is completely up to you!

What's The Best, Quickest Way To Build My First Deck?
Here's a short cut to your first legal 60 card deck. Buy two Young Jedi Starter Decks (120 cards). It doesn't matter which expansion it's from. Or, buy one and have a friend buy one, and trade cards so that one of you has all the Dark Side Cards, and the other, all the Light Side cards. Either way, you will then have a basic deck, one Dark Side and one Light Side.

Each Starter Set comes with 60 cards - a deck of 30 Light Side cards (blue back) and a deck of 30 Dark Side cards (red back). These decks are "fixed." That means every Starter Set Light Side and Dark Side deck is the same. Unlike YJ Booster Packs, there is no random element. Starter Sets contain two vital ingredients for the game that you cannot get in a Booster Pack - the location cards and the Rulebook!

Each 30-card Light Side deck and 30-card Dark Side deck in each Starter Set contains 5 cards of each of the 6 deckbuilding dot colors. If you combine the decks from two Starter Sets, you will have 60 Light Side cards and 60 Dark Side cards. The two decks will match all the rules we listed above.

Add Muscle And Fun To Your 60-card Deck
Once you have a legal 60 card deck, you can add some flair to it by using cards from the YJ Booster packs. In each randomly assorted Booster pack you'll find 11 Young Jedi CCG cards (one rare, three uncommons and seven commons). For every Booster pack card you add to a deck, you have to take away one card in the deck of that same color. Follow the "6 by 10 rule" always - keep your deck to 60 cards, 10 of each color.

That's a start towards mastery of Young Jedi. Are you ready to learn more? Check out an article that talks about the basics of playing.
